The final installment of this program is on Wednesday, September 17. Art House Day is for paid public events only, and not applicable for film festivals, free events or institutional screenings. Only One More Private Screening…

I've been all over the world to show “Eno” over the past year, but we’re still getting a lot of requests to do private screenings for various companies, groups and conferences. I love sharing unique versions of the film and talking about the technology involved and its larger ramifications. But there are only so many places I can physically go!

So I've decided I'll be doing only three private screenings of the film this year, and two of those are already spoken for. Book the last slot now at ohyouprettythings.com. I'll come to your company, university or conference (or your living room) and create a unique version of the film, and afterwards we can have a conversation about creativity and technology. Greetings! I’m psyched to announce the Japanese theatrical premiere of “Eno” with special cinema screenings in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka in June and July. In order to create multiple unique subtitled versions of the film, we’ve designed a special Japanese build of our generative software system, Brain One. This was a massive undertaking but I can’t wait to share new versions of “Eno” with our friends in Japan. There’s even a Japanese trailer.

The premiere event is June 21st in Tokyo, and I’ll be there to present the film. Musicologist Peter Barakan will join me in conversation afterwards. Two weeks of screenings will follow in July. Presented with our friends at Beatink and Tokyu Cinemas.

Limited “Eno” Japanese Posters

Created especially for the Japanese release of the film, we’re offering this limited edition poster in the slightly smaller A2 size (16.5 in x 23.4 in). It’s based on the original design by Build, but with Japanese text.

The Japanese poster will be available at Oh You Pretty Things until our supply runs out. This will not be a regularly stocked item so order one now.

Generation 4 of “Eno” is coming…

One of most interesting aspects of using a software-based platform to dynamically create a film is that it can continue to evolve over time. We can add more footage to the film’s data set, we can continue to develop the software’s functionality, or we can change the narrative arc after receiving audience feedback. The film and the storytelling structure itself can continually develop.

“Eno” is currently in Generation 3, which was the third major update of the film and software. But starting in mid-September, it will move into Generation 4, with more new scenes and footage added into the mix, and more real-time generative actions by Anamorph’s latest Brain One software. It’s not going to be radically different from Gen 3, it’s more of an evolution into its next form, which in itself is a fascinating thing to think about: we can now make films that evolve.

Almost everything we’re doing with “Eno” is breaking ground in some way, and it’s exciting to keep experimenting with the film and this new approach to cinema. I’m looking forward to showing you all Gen 4 in September, stay tuned for more details.

Now Streaming: Four Bonus EP’s of Music from the Film

Understandably, we used a lot of Brian Eno’s music in “Eno”. Far too much to fit on one soundtrack release. So Universal Music has released four digital EP’s as “bonus scenes” with additional music, and all four are available to stream now on Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and others. These 19 tracks span the breadth of Brian’s music career from his first solo release to his latest album, and make a wonderful companion piece to the official soundtrack. Stream them now wherever you listen to music, or buy the soundtrack vinyl from Brian’s site or a record shop near you.

Designed by Build with a photo collage inspired by the generative software I developed with digital artist Brendan Dawes. Lots of new reviews are starting to pour in from the “Eno” cinema runs, and the first is this Critic’s Pick from the New York Times! I think writer Alissa Wilkinson really “got” the concept of the film, and it’s definitely worth a read.

“To the extent “Eno” has a single, fixed meaning, it’s about how we, the audience, understand the world around us. Our brains seek out patterns and assign sense where there is none, and thus we become creators with the artist. And the results are both marvelously watchable — you wouldn’t know all this complicated generative stuff was even happening if you went in cold — and inspiring. There’s a pure joy to this documentary, a sense that creativity is miraculous and we ought to be grateful that we get to participate in it. I left both screenings full of ideas for my own work.

The generative framework makes perfect sense for a documentary about a man who’s spent his career rewriting the rules of the possible — not just finding a new way to say something, but changing the act of saying itself.”

Greetings friends! I’ve just returned from Australia for a week of “Eno” screenings, it was so much fun showing the film down under, and hard to believe it had been 17 years since I was last there for “Helvetica”. Qantas totally destroyed one of my bags: I mean completely shredded the bag in half and destroyed most of its contents. So that sucked. But the audiences were absolutely amazing, and a sincere thanks to the staffs of Sydney Opera House and ACMI for their hospitality and professionalism. To all the people who came out to see the film, thank you for being part of this experiment!

More exciting screening news: we’re doing a return live screening in Toronto (just announced and almost sold out already) plus new premieres in Austin, Nashville, and the legendary Glastonbury Festival in England. Speaking of the UK, we’ll be screening the film with Picturehouse at over a dozen locations in England and Scotland opening July 12! More info on that soon. And this weekend there’s a special live screening of the film at the Sheffield Doc Fest with our esteemed Director of Programming Brendan Dawes at the helm and in conversation afterwards. New “Eno” Letterpress Prints

We’ve just released two letterpress mini-posters for “Eno”! These are beautiful prints on 5" x 7" Cranes Lettra 300gsm paper. One features the film’s title treatment by Build (the level of detail in the printing of the tiny credits is unbelievable). The other print features our new Brain One generative machine used to create the film at live screenings, designed by Anamorph and Teenage Engineering.

Quantities are limited on these, get them now. We’ve also released an official tour poster for “Eno’ which is only available at screenings, so you’ll have to get to one of our events to see those…

Hi everyone! My new documentary about Brian Eno had its World Premiere this past weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, and the response has been incredible. Audiences have been inspired by Brian's ideas about creativity, art, and life. And the film community has been buzzing about the potential of the generative software we've created that powers the film. I'm still wrapping my brain around everything that's happened in the past few days.

"Eno" represents a new idea about how films can be made and watched. The film is assembled dynamically by a generative software platform I developed with Brendan Dawes drawing from new interviews and footage we shot with Brian and hundreds of hours of unreleased material from his archive. The result is a film that's never the same twice. Every time "Eno" is shown, it's a different movie with different scenes, different music, etc. So the six generations of the film we're showing here at Sundance will never be seen again anywhere. The conversations I've been having with other filmmakers here about the possibilities of this new technology are actually the most exciting part of this experience so far. I can't wait to keep exploring this stuff!

To celebrate the Sundance premiere of Eno, we’ve released a new poster for the film designed by Build and inspired by the generative system we’ve created for the film. It’s the full theatrical one-sheet size (27”x40”) and printed on ultra white #80 McCoy Silk stock. Posters are sold unframed and are $50 each.

The first 50 poster orders will receive a free “Eno” badge direct from Sundance! We’ve been giving these out at the premiere screenings, order a poster and we’ll send you one (it’ll be a random white, black or pink).

“Eno” Limited-Edition Prints

In preparation for the premiere of Eno, we’ve released a set of limited-edition art prints for the film designed by Build and inspired by the generative system we’ve created for the film. A2 size (16.5” x 23.4”) in a numbered edition of 250 copies, all individually signed (with a broken hand) by yours truly. The two prints are designed to be standalone pieces or they can be displayed side by side in a never-ending sequence.

There are a limited number of these prints available and they will not be reprinted. See more photos or grab a set now.

Hello friends! This week I’m heading to London for more filming with pioneering musician and artist Brian Eno for my forthcoming documentary. Eno is the first career-spanning feature-length film about Brian’s work and ideas, and it’ll be completed later this year. (Not familiar with Brian Eno? Read this Beginners Guide at The Fader.)

Meanwhile in New York we’ve been working on editing the film and combing through nearly 500 hours of video from Brian’s archive. This includes early video art experiments from Brian’s time in NYC in the early ‘80s, plus home movies, obscure interviews, lectures, behind-the-scenes footage of recording sessions, and lots more. Most of this footage has never been seen publicly.

We’re also editing the new interview footage we’ve shot with Brian over the past three years, and I’ll be continuing my conversations with him this week on topics ranging from his own career history to his ideas on creativity, technology, and much more. But I’d love to hear what you’d ask Brian if you had the chance.

Brian Eno Announces First-Ever Solo Tour

It’s surprising to most Eno fans that Brian has never toured during his 50-year career as a solo artist. He’s done one-off shows over the years, and of course toured with his first band Roxy Music in the early ‘70s (the grind of touring was one of the reasons he left the band). He famously hates performing live, and in the past 15 years he’s only played live once. That’s all changing as he’ll be playing a string of dates this October with a 100-piece orchestra, including shows in Venice, Berlin, Paris, Utrecht and London. Okay, five cities is a pretty small tour, but for Eno this is a big deal!

Brian has teamed up with electronic musician Fred Again.. for a new collaborative album, Secret Life, released a few weeks ago. “It's a genuinely gorgeous record and not exactly what you might expect from either Fred again.. or Brian Eno on their own,” says Brooklyn Vegan.

As part of the celebration, Brendan Dawes and I will present "Nothing Can Ever Be The Same", a 168-hour video art installation inside the Arsenale in Venice, opening October 22nd. The piece uses generative software we've developed to reimagine Eno’s music, art, new footage and archival material into a vast collage of sounds and images. It's an immersive cinematic experience that goes on forever (or in this version, for one week) and never repeats itself. There will be different iterations of this piece shown in other cities as well. We’ll be posting sneak peeks of this new work for subscribers here as it gets closer to the opening.
